Adult Education Announcements 2010 Knox County Schools Adult Education Graduation Ceremony Knox County Schools Adult Education conducted its 2010 Graduation Ceremony on May 27th, 2010 at Wallace Memorial Baptist Church.
The ceremony was a huge success with our program graduating 404 students. This was a proud moment for our students and gave them an opportunity to walk across the stage in full cap and gown and receive their GED with families in attendance. Guest speakers for the ceremony included Marva Doremus, Tn Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Honorable Tim Irwin, Knox County Juvenile Court, Dr. James P. McIntyre, Jr, Superintendent, and Mayor Mike Ragsdale. A Roll Call of students earning their GED while incarcerated in the Knox Co Jail and Detention Facility was conducted by Chief Pete Garza, Knox County Sheriff's Office Programs Manager and was on WKCS 91.1 FM so inmates could hear their names announced on the radio. Presentation of Certificates was conducted by Dr. James P. McIntyre, Jr, Superintendent, and Dr. Donna Wright, Assistant Superintendent. 594-3622 A Proclamation to Gretchen WilsonCounty Mayor Mike Ragsdale and City Mayor Bill Haslam proclaimed Dec. 17 "Gretchen Wilson Day" in honor of her support and effort on behalf of Adult Education across the state of Tennessee. Wilson, a Grammy Award-winning country music singer and recent GED (General Education Development) graduate in town for a concert that day, was presented a proclamation stating "it is the goal of Knox County Schools Adult Education and Knox County governing bodies to enroll citizens without high school diplomas in GED programs." Adult education classes, which include GED and ELL (English Language Learners) are offered at Historic Knoxville High downtown. Classes are taught by licensed instructors who help individuals earn their GED, learn literacy skills, gain employability skills and brush up on their basic academic skills. All classes are free and available to students year-round. The Adult Education program is funded by Knox County Schools and the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
