The Knox County Schools Adult Education program offers instruction in Basic Skills, Pre-GED,
G.E.D. Preparation, and English Language Learners (ELL) for non-native speakers of English.
Mission: The mission of Knox County Schools Adult Education is:
- to work with students to help them reach their educational goals.
- to teach students how to learn so when they complete the program they are equipped to be independent life-long learners.
Who can attend?
Adult Education is open to anyone 17 years or older.
A student who is 17 years old will require a compulsory release form from the last school attended and an age waiver which will be given by the GED Office. A student who is 18 years old must officially withdraw from last school attended.
What does it cost?
There are no fees to pay for materials and instruction. These adult classes are supported by Knox County Schools, the Tennessee Department of Adult Education, and the Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
What are the Steps to Earn My G. E. D.?
You have two options for beginning the process of earning your
G.E.D.
Your first option is coming to an
Orientation. During your
Orientation you will be given a test that is
not a pass or fail test, it just lets us know if you need any help with any subject. If you do need help, classes will be provided for you free of charge and you will not have to take any subjects that you do not need.
Your second option is the
Official Practice Test also called an
OPT. The state of Tennessee requires this test before you are allowed to take the
actual G.E.D. Test. It is half as long as the
G.E.D., and the same difficulty. Usually, if you are feeling good about your algebra and essay writing skills you are ready to take an
OPT. After taking the
Official Practice Test, if there are any subjects that you need help with classes will be offered free of charge to you to help raise your scores before taking the
G.E.D. Test.
All of our teachers are board certified and able to help with any subject. You will work in a classroom environment with both large group and individual instruction. Each person can work at his or her own pace, you can go through your classes as quickly as you feel comfortable with or as slowly as you need to make the progress you desire. Our goal is to provide you with the best possible instruction to be successful in obtaining your G.E.D. We realize that you have many responsibilities and finding time for class may be difficult and that is why our teachers try their best to make every minute of your class time productive.
There are times when we receive funding that makes it possible for us to help you with the cost of your G.E.D. Test. However, you must make certain scores on your Official Practice Test to qualify for this funding. To find out if this funding is available and information about the scores you will need to qualify, please call our office 594-3622 or ask your teacher.
We also provide a Graduation Ceremony once a year for all who obtain their G.E.D. after taking your Official Practice Test with us. It is a full cap and gown ceremony with all the trimmings! You may invite as many friends and family members as you like and we promise to make it a very special event in your life
